Following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, special counsel Jack Smith requested additional time to reassess his election-related case against Trump, citing “unprecedented circumstances.” U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan approved Smith's request, vacating all pretrial deadlines and requiring a status report by December 2. The Department of Justice (DOJ) reaffirmed its policy against prosecuting sitting presidents, and several top Republicans, including former Attorney General Bill Barr, have called on prosecutors to drop their cases against Trump, arguing it would unite the country. Meanwhile, Smith’s other case concerning Trump’s handling of classified documents is on hold due to an appeal, and Trump’s New York sentencing related to 2016 campaign finance issues is scheduled for later this month. Trump has expressed intentions to fire Smith and may have authority to dismiss federal cases upon taking office, although state-led cases, like those in Georgia, could proceed independently.
