Expert Virologist Dr. Steven Hatfill Explains How Viruses Jump From Animals To Humans

In a recent presentation at the Fourth Florida Conference on COVID Dr. Steven Hatfill provided a scientific overview of emerging infectious diseases. He explained zoonotic diseases—those originating in animals and sometimes jumping to humans—and their potential for pandemics, emphasizing that these cross-species transmissions are often linked to human encroachment into wild areas. He detailed historical and current threats such as bird flu (H5N1), which has recently surged among birds globally and poses a theoretical risk to humans, although, so far, human cases remain limited and largely non-lethal.

Dr. Hatfill also examined the evolution of monkeypox, noting that this virus has mutated over time and now contains a larger number of genetic differences compared to its original strain, causing concern among public health experts. Although monkeypox is not highly transmissible between humans and remains largely limited to specific communities, Dr. Hatfill warned of potential consequences if this virus were to evolve similarly to other poxviruses….more
